The Avaluator is the very latest avalanche accident prevention tool.
It is designed to help you make informed safety decisions during
backcountry adventures. The Avaluator was developed based on research data from more than 1400 North American avalanche accidents that were studied over a 3 year period.
BackcountrySafety donates all of its profits
from the sale of the Avaluator to the Canadian Avalanche Centre. It is
our honour to support the experts who were instrumental in creating the
Avaluator project. We value their services and comittment, and this is
our way of helping to support the Canadian Avalanche Centre.
The Avaluator Card is designed to help you make critical decisions
before and during your backcountry trips. The card and its accompanying
booklet focus on four key decisions and travel skills:
- TRIP PLANNING
- IDENTIFYING AVALANCHE TERRAIN
- SLOPE EVALUATION
- GOOD TRAVEL HABITS
The whole Avaluator package (booklet + Avaluator Card) is a great educational tool that will show you how to use snow stability, terrain and avalanche bulletin information effectively.
Furthermore the Avaluator Card features a check list consisting of 7 questions that will help you quickly assess your exposure to avalanche danger before you enter any questionable terrain or slope.
Even with the Avaluator in your pocket, the Canadian Avalanche Centre highly recommends to carry an avalanche beacon, avalanche probe and snow shovel
when venturing into the winter backcountry. And of course, CAC wants
you to practice with all of your safety equipment before having to use
it in real circumstances.
